“So how long have you been getting these pains?

shrugged her shoulders, glancing at . “I don’t know. Since I got back, but that was the first time I fainted.

turned his eyes up at the ceiling to think. “Where are the pains? He asked.

“Right here, in my chest. pointed to where her heart would be.

swallowed hard and turned his face away so and couldn’t see. He scooted forward on the couch, rubbing his mouth stressfully.

“So the pain’s in your heart? raised his eyebrow.

“Yeah, and it sort of spreads throughout my middle, too, said.

“I’ll—I’ll be right back, said as he quickly got up from the couch and walked off to his room, leaving and confused.

paced the floor a couple of times before appeared in the doorway. She could tell something was bothering him just by the way he stormed out of the living room. It was his way of hiding his feelings.

“Are you okay? She asked him.

shook his head. “Close the door, he said. “Please.

entered the room and closed the door behind her. “Okay. Are you going to tell me now what’s bothering you?

chewed his bottom lip. “Yeah. He proceeded to stutter with his words. He wasn’t sure how he was going to talk about it without breaking down in tears.

knew this had to be big. She hushed him as she approached him, cupping his face with her hands. She stared him in the eyes.

“What is it, ? You’re starting to scare me a little, she said.

“Do, do you remember how you died?

dropped her hands and took a step back. “Why?

“What do you remember? He asked, staring into her foggy eyes.

swallowed hard. “I remember that it was late, she began, “and that I was attacked.

took a step forward, his sad eyes fixed on her. He remembered that night all too well. Something he wishes he could forget.

McFly had rehearsals that night, and had promised to pick up from school afterward, but the boys were running late. She waited for him for a while before a man, who had just robbed a bank, ran into her. She had seen his face and he couldn’t risk being turned in, so he did the only other thing that came to mind...

ran his fingertips along ’s neck and the trim of her tank-top. He looked at her, asking for her permission with just his eyes. She pulled down her tank-top to reveal a four inch knife wound on her chest, right where her heart would be. It had been bloody on the night of the attack, but now it was nothing more than a black slit with wrinkled edges where the skin would meet.

“I remember being stabbed, whispered . “Several times... all over my chest and sach.

Touching the wound, ’s eyes began to well up with tears. It was blurring his vision. He sniffed them back and blinked them away. He wasn’t going to let himself cry in front of her.

“I’m sorry, he said, looking her straight in the eyes.

“What, it didn’t hurt.

“No, shook his head. “I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you like I promised.

stared at him. “Do you think this was your fault? That you did this to me?

walked away, toward his bedroom window, trying to hide the fact that he just couldn’t hold in the tears anymore.

“, I don’t blame you. This, pointed to her chest wound, “wasn’t your fault.

“I should have been there. I promised, he said.

“You didn’t know. No one knew, said . “No one blames you, .

They stood in silence for a moment. came knocking on the door, poking his head in cautiously.

“Is everything all right? He asked.

spun around. “Yes. Everything’s fine. Thanks, .

“Sure, no problem. I’m gonna go then, said .

“Okay. She flashed him a small smile.

slowly closed the door and left and alone once again. approached , his back still facing her, and wrapped her arms around him. He didn’t even push away this time.
