had fallen asleep soon after the pain in her chest subsided. She and cuddled up together on the bed and watched her sleep for a while, his arm draped around her waist.
The next morning, they woke up together. It felt like a long time since they had been able to do that. smiled and held close.
“Good morning.� He cooed.
“Hi.� She grinned.
“I was thinking.�
“You were, were you?�
“Yeah,� said .
“Okay, what were you thinking?�
“I was thinking we should go out tonight, just the two of us, to dinner or something,� he said, caressing ’s arm with the tips of his fingers.
“You wanna go out? Like, a date?� ’s eyes lit up.
“Yeah, like a date. Are you up for it?�
“Of course,� she exclaimed. “I’d love to.�
“Great,� smiled. “Be ready by seven tonight.�
“Oh, I will.�
Later that afternoon, came over for a bit to hang out and chat. Having back from the dead still freaked him out, but he was trying hard not to show it. He was on the couch with , sitting as stiff as a board, barely breathing. had gone in the bathroom to take a shower.
“This is weird,� said .
“Why is this weird?� asked.
“Shit like this only happens in films and stuff.�
chuckled to herself. “Maybe we’re all stuck in a dream.�
“Maybe,� said.
shook her head. “Relax!� She pushed him playfully. “I’m not going to bite.�
laughed awkwardly, his face flushing red. “All right. I’m going to go. Tell that I’ll call him later.�
“Aw... okay.� pouted.

got up off the couch and walked out the door. He accidentally brushed shoulders with a man who was leaving the apartment two doors down. He had dark tousled hair, scruffy facial hair on his chin and a scar above his lip. guessed him to be about six feet tall and noticed he had big hands.
“Sorry, dude,� said .
The man just looked at , nodded and continued walking. watched him leave until he was completely out of sight. He got a strange feeling from the guy, a feeling he couldn’t quite describe.
climbed out of the shower and wrapped a towel around his waist. He walked over to the mirror above the bathroom sink and wiped at the fog so he could see himself. His hair was wet and stringy, laying this way and that on his head. quickly threw on some clothes before leaving the steamy bathroom behind.
“You know, I was also thinking that maybe we sh—�
stopped in his tracks, his heart pounding hard. was lying still on the floor. He rushed over to her and began calling her name, trying to get her to open her eyes. She didn’t respond. tried looking for a pulse but gave up when he realized she didn’t have one. She was dead.
He got up from the floor and quickly grabbed the phone, dialing ’s number. As waited for an answer, he kneeled back down beside .
“,� he exclaimed. “Something’s wrong with . I don’t know what to do.�
“What happened?� asked.
“I don’t know. I was in the shower and was with her. When I came out I found her on the floor. She won’t open her eyes. It’s like she’s—� didn’t want to think about the possibility of her being gone, dead. He lost once and he wasn’t going to lose her again.
“Well, where’s ?�
“He’s gone. I, I—, what do I do?� panicked.
There was a moment of silence on ’s end of the phone. It made nervous.
“Take her to the hospital?�
“Oh, that’s clever. She hasn’t got a pulse or a heart beat. They’re going to think she’s dead,� he shouted.
“, she is dead,� said gently.
rubbed his forehead. “Yes, I know,� he whispered. “But we have to do something. I can’t lose her.�
told him to relax and that he’d be over in a few minutes. took ’s hand and held it, caressing it, kissing it. He stared at her wishing there was some kind of clue that could tell him she wasn’t gone for good.
arrived a few minutes later, busting through the front door. looked up at with a helpless look in his eyes, pleading for his help.
“Don’t worry, she’ll be all right,� said . “She’ll wake up.�
let out a sigh. “And what if she doesn’t?�
“Don’t think about that right now,� he said. “Go get some cold water.�
“Cold water? What for?� asked as he headed toward the kitchen.
“We’re gonna splash it on her face.�
“And that’s going to work?�
“I’m hoping,� said .
filled a glass up with some tap water and brought it over to . poured the water on ’s face in one swift motion, hoping it would shock her back to life, but it didn’t.
“Let’s try warm water,� he told .
took the glass from and rushed to the kitchen to refill it. He brought it back over to and poured it quickly on . Her eyes shot open and she struggled to sit up.
“I’m gonna get a towel,� said .
“Okay.�
wrapped his arms around and held her close to his chest, the wetness of her hair dampening the shoulder of his shirt.
“Are you okay?� He asked her.
“Yeah, I’m fine.�
“What happened?�
“I don’t know. All I remember is saying goodbye to and then my chest started to hurt. Everything after that is a blur,� explained .
returned with a white terrycloth towel and draped it over ’s shoulders.
“Is she all right?�
“Yeah, she’s fine,� said. “But we have to figure out why this is happening.�
