Woken up by his personal mobile ring tone, turned over on the couch, reaching toward the coffee table for his phone. He struggled for a moment before his fingertips brushed part of the device.

He brought the phone to his ear. “Hello? His voice groggy and full of sleep.

“Hey, replied ’s voice. “How are you?

“Oh, hey. I’m good. rubbed his eyes as he sat up.

“How’s things with ? He asked in a cautious tone.

“Good I suppose. I don’t know, he said. “It’s still a bit weird.

“Oh.

“She’s asleep at the minute, yawned, rubbing his eyes once more.

“Well, began, “Not a lot of people get this chance, you know. Make it last.

“Yeah, he whispered, his mind overloading with a million thoughts.

Both ends of the phone went completely silent. ’s eyes still weren’t adjusting to the sunlight peeking through the window curtains. A noise erupted from his bedroom.

“Hey, I’ve got to go. She’s up, he said.

“All right, I’ll see you later.

“Bye. closed his phone and stood up from the couch.

The bedroom door opened slowly and appeared in the doorway a second later. She greeted him with a small smile and waved.

“Mornin’.

“Hi, she said shyly.

They stood with their feet glued to the floor. They said nothing and didn’t even look at each other. It was hard to feel comfortable when the circumstances were so bizarre. How else were they supposed to feel? Things lately haven’t been exactly normal. Who could explain it? couldn’t. He couldn’t bring himself to believe it.

“Do you want some breakfast? He spoke.

looked up, startled. “Um, yeah. Sure.

headed for the kitchen as followed, making sure not to follow too closely. It was hard; there was so much she wanted to do, like hug him or kiss him, but he wasn’t ready. They would be moving too fast.

started opening all the cabinets and going through the freezer, searching for pancake batter, hash browns, sausage, or something. Just anything so he could put together a decent breakfast.

“All I’ve got is cold cereal, he said.

smiled. “Cold cereal sounds good.

“Are you sure? We could go out if you want.

“And you’d be comfortable with that? She asked with her eyebrow raised.

scratched his head. “Sure.

wasn’t convinced. She could see the truth in his body language; he was already uncomfortable with having this conversation. How would going out in public be any less uncomfortable? Paparazzi would see them. Fans would see them. They would all wonder how came back from the dead.

“Actually, let’s not risk it, he said.

“Cold cereal it is then, she flashed a thin smile.

took two bowls out of the cabinet and set them on the kitchen counter. He grabbed the cereal from the pantry and the milk from the refrigerator. He shook the cereal into each bowl and poured in the ice, cold milk. He rinsed off two spoons and dunked them in the bowls.

“Thanks, said as she took one of the bowls.

nodded, leaving the kitchen to have a seat in the living room. slowly spun around, following him with her eyes. She watched him for a minute flipping through channels on the TV and chewing spoonfuls of cereal.

She walked into the living room, setting her bowl on the coffee table and joining on the couch. She took the remote from his hand and turned the TV off.

“Let’s talk, she said.

“There’s nothing to talk about, he replied with a mouthful of cereal.

pushed her lips to one side. “How’s everything with McFly?

“Fine.

“Have you written any new songs?

“Yeah.

“Are they any good?

“I don’t know, he shrugged.

grunted. “, talk to me. Please! Her voice sounded defeated. “Or look at me, at least.

“I don’t know what you want from me, he replied. “Really. I don’t.

“Just acknowledge me.

“I am. I’m talking to you right now, aren’t I? half-shouted, his eyes never meeting hers.

“Just...forget it, sighed heavily.

She got up from the couch and grabbed her bowl of cereal.

“If you didn’t really want me here, why did you make the wish? She asked, hurt, as she walked away.

swallowed hard, his heartbeat thumping in his ears. He was being a jerk. He was being stubborn. He was pushing her away. He was pushing everyone away. Why couldn’t he stop? Why did he continue to hurt everyone he loved over and over again? Learn, you bastard, learn, he ordered himself.

He finished off his cereal, setting his empty bowl in the sink. He wiped his hands on the front of his jeans and headed for the bedroom.

“Can I come in? He asked through the closed door.

“That depends... her voice trailed off.

“On what?

The door opened a second later, revealing ’s saddened face. She looked up at him, but turned away. She sighed quietly, disappointed once again. She missed the way he used to look at her.

“What do you want? She asked in a dry tone.

“Can I come in? He shoved his hands in his pockets.

“It’s your room, isn’t it?

stepped out of the way, setting herself down on the edge of the bed crossing her legs. She began to pick at her fingernails, keeping her eyes down, away from ’s. If he could do it, so could she.

“I’m sorry, his voice rang soft.

“What? looked up immediately.

“I’m sorry, repeated. “I know I’ve been pretty horrible to you since you’ve been back— and to everyone else as well. I’m just so confused at the minute. I don’t know what to do.

“It’s okay, she assured him.

“No, it’s not okay. I’ve been out of order, he said. “I made that wish to get you back and have been going about it the wrong way.

stared up at him, her eyes locked on his. They weren’t looking back at her, though.

“When I made that wish, I also made a promise to you, he began, “I promised to be better and I haven’t. I’m sorry.

Her heart skipped. He was looking at her— or was ’s eyes playing tricks on her? She could see his blue eyes perfectly, staring into them like there was no orrow. They were beautiful, just like she remembered them.

kneeled down in front of her, his gaze locked on her face, her eyes, her lips. He couldn’t turn away from her, which was strange. Before, he couldn’t bring himself to look at her and now he couldn’t look away. He smiled as tears filled his eyes.

A long moment went by.

Suddenly, clenched her chest and winced. panicked, holding her up so she wouldn’t fall off the bed. Her face was wet from the tears that had run down her cheeks, and white— whiter than it was before, if that were at all possible. The grey had somehow disappeared.

“Are you okay? What’s wrong? He worried.

“It hurts again, she managed to say.

clenched her chest tighter, hoping to relieve some of the burning. It felt like jabs to the heart, jabbing her repeatedly in the same area. She almost couldn’t catch her breath.

“I’m calling for help, said, getting up from his knees.

“No, she grabbed his arm, “It’ll pass, stay with me.

got back down on his knees, tracing ’s face with his eyes. He could see the pain in her translucent eyes getting stronger and stronger every second. He started to worry that maybe it was time for her to leave him now. Maybe the wish had been fulfilled and she had to go, whether he wanted her to or not. He didn’t have a choice.

Regret started to flood through his body. All that time he was pushing her away, arguing and being stubborn, he could have been holding her, kissing her and talking about nonsense with her. Instead, he was being a jerk, wasting time not being with her.

“I thought...when you were dead, she stammered, “you didn’t feel...anything.

gave a sad, sympathetic look. He didn’t like seeing her like this. He didn’t like seeing her upset or in pain. He somehow felt it too, but in a less intense way.

“Maybe you’re not dead, he whispered hopefully.

looked up at confused, and for a moment the pain subsided. Their eyes locked in a stare; they couldn’t turn away from each other. For that minute, saw the real . Her eyes were a deep chocolate brown, her skin soft and healthy like porcelain, her lips red and subtle with life.

Their faces were only a couple of inches away now, slowly moving closer with each second. But pulled away just before they could touch. He wanted to kiss her. He wanted to kiss her so badly that his body tensed up with anger, shaking ever-so-slightly. He wanted to bring himself to do it—really, he did—but a part of him was still too afraid to get that close. If he allowed himself to accept her being here, would he lose her all over again without a chance to say goodbye?
