drove to a place that no one really knew about except her and (and now ). It was their secret place, the place where they often went together to get away from everything. A place where they could be alone and talk.

hadn’t paid it a visit since had died, but she had a feeling that, that’s where he went when he had stormed out of the apartment.

“You don’t have to wait for me, she said, popping her door open.

“Are you sure? asked.

“I’m sure. Thanks, she smiled.

“All right. Good luck.

closed the door and waved to as he drove away. She sighed, mentally preparing herself for the chance she was about to take.

She walked down the hill of sand on the beach, her shoes sinking in the sand causing her to feel a little disoriented. But she managed.

There was a cove on the west side of the beach. headed toward it, the wind blowing through her , hair. She could feel something tightening in her chest. She realized that all of the feelings she felt when she was alive were still there. She thought they would have died with her.

poked her head into the rocky cove and scanned the inside nervously. She spotted a small fire burning and a smile immediately appeared on her face. was here, just like she thought he’d be.

As she stepped on a twig, it cracked beneath her foot and glanced behind him. He quickly turned away when he saw it was only .

“Hi, she greeted him quietly.

didn’t respond. He continued to gather small rocks and draw circles in the sand with his fingers.

approached him. “Are you angry with me?

The waves crashed peacefully and the morning birds sang. It was quite cold inside the cove.

“Please, , talk to me, she pleaded, bending down beside him.

“What do you want me to say? You’re dead, he finally said, his voice filled with anger and pain.

felt her heart sink—it was like a bullet through the chest—but how could it? She was dead.

“Do you want me to pretend like everything’s all right because you’re here now? stared into her eyes, but only for a second.

“But you wished for me, she whispered.

“Yes, I know, he said with annoyance. “I know that I wished for you, but come on. This, you coming back from the dead, is crazy. I know that. You know that. We all know that. Shit like this doesn’t happen.

looked down at her hands and adjusted herself on her knees. It was obvious. She could hear it in ’s voice and see it in his piercing eyes.

“You’re scared, she said.

“What? No. I’m not scared. He sounded just as offended as when had accused him of the same thing.

“Yes you are. You won’t even look at me, said gently.

“I can’t.

“What are you scared of?

“I’m not scared, fixed his gaze on the fire.

“What are you scared of? She asked; he didn’t answer. “What are you scared of?

“I don’t want to lose you again, he shouted, his eyes glossy with tears.

bit her bottom lip. “I don’t know how long I’m going to be here, but you’ve been given a second chance. Don’t be stupid.

“That’s what said.

“Well, he’s right, so listen to him.

chuckled under his breath and cracked a small smile. made a face in mock horror.

“Did just smile? She gasped.

He turned away to hide his face.

“A small smile, but still a smile, she said. “I love your smile.

got up from the ground and walked away, deeper into the cove. She approached one of the rocky walls, running her fingertips against the cold, hard, bumpy surface. She didn’t mind the cold much; she was already too cold herself to notice.

There was a carving in one of the rocks. It said and with a heart carved below it. had carved their names into the rock two months after their first date together. He was trying to be romantic and claim the cove as theirs.

traced the carving with her index finger.

“I can’t believe how sappy we were. Doesn’t, like, everybody do something like that to prove their love for each other?

“Don’t, she turned and looked at him.

“What? shrugged his shoulders.

“Just don’t, said. “I love it. It was one of my favorite days with you.

He pressed his lips together and didn’t bother to push the subject. watched as she wandered the cove. She looked normal in the flickering light of the small fire going. Her pale skin didn’t look so pale, the dark circles around her eyes didn’t look so unhealthy, and her eyes didn’t seem so see-through, lifeless. As long as no one touched her skin, she could be mistaken for a normal, living human being.

couldn’t help but think she was the most beautiful girl in the world. He always thought that about her, though. He just couldn’t quite think of any other girl that way, not since the day he first met .

They left the cove together and drove back to the apartment in ’s car. It was an awfully quiet drive for the first half, and neither one dared to look at each other.

Then, suddenly, brought her hand to her chest, trying to relieve the burning sensation. It became more intense as the burning turned into a sharp pain, jabbing every few seconds in the same spot. She hissed in pain.

“What’s wrong? Are you all right? turned his eyes from the road to glance at with worry.

She hissed again. “Yeah, I’m fine.

“You don’t look fine, he said. “I’m pulling over.

clenched her chest, wincing in more pain. The intensity was indescribable. She leaned forward gently pressing her forehead on the dashboard. quickly drove his car to the side of the road, coming to a slow halt. He turned his entire body to face her, touching her ice, cold arm without thought.

“, are you all right? Where does it hurt?

It fell silent. wasn’t making a single sound. She didn’t even move. She just sat there, her head pressed against the dashboard, a hand on her chest. began to worry more and more as seconds ticked by. What was she doing? Why was she being so still? was afraid to think the worse, but death was all that crossed his mind at that moment. Had it all ended just like that? Did his second chance run a short course?

He hesitated for a moment. “?

She slowly straightened up, brushing her hair back away from her face. looked at him with her translucent eyes.

“It’s gone, she told . “The pain is gone.

“Are you sure? He asked, wary.

thought as she brought her hand to her chest. “Yeah. It’s gone, she smiled.

“Okay, slowly said, confused. “What was that all about?

“I don’t know. All of a sudden I just got this pain in my chest.

“Are you all right now?

She flashed him another smile. “Yes, I’m all right now. Thank you.

sighed with relief. “Okay.

He turned right around, put the car in drive and crept out into traffic. couldn’t help smiling to herself as they proceeded to drive home in silence. She saw the worry and concern in ’s eyes when he’d asked her if she was okay and those crazy butterflies began to flutter again.

When drove up in front of his apartment, he turned to look at , who had fallen asleep at some point during the drive, as he cut the engine. He sat in silence for a minute, staring at her intensely.

“You’re so beautiful, he whispered before he climbed out of the car.

walked around to the passengers’ side, opening the door slowly, being careful not to knock out into the street. Her head was against the window, her expression peaceful. He crouched down slightly and caught in his arms; she didn’t wake. He scooped her up, closing the door with his foot.

She felt light-weight in his grip and cold against his chest. didn’t struggle to the front door, where he put in the key and unlocked the apartment. He entered, kicking the door closed gently.

He hoped the racing of his heart didn’t wake her.

couldn’t believe that was in his arms again. He was able to hold her, touch her, talk with her again. And although it was driving him mad trying to figure out how one wish could bring her back to him, he was the happiest he had ever felt. However, scared all at the same time.

But what was he scared of? He didn’t quite know.

placed down on his bed. He removed her shoes and pulled a blanket over her body. He watched her for a few minutes, her expression still beautiful and angelic. He left quietly, closing the door behind him.
