woke up suddenly the next morning and touched the empty space beside him on the bed. He could have sworn that he felt someone laying there just a moment before.
He sat up confused, running his fingers through his hair and observing his bedroom. What a mess, he thought. He hadn’t realized how badly he let it get over the past three months.
There were clothes scattered all over the floor in a wrinkly pile; pieces of paper crumpled up everywhere with unfinished lyrics on them. It had been difficult for him to write a song these days. He would always get started, but ended up hating what he wrote half way through.
There was no inspiration.
climbed out of bed and stumbled out into the living room. He then headed in the kitchen where he opened the refrigerator door and gulped down some orange juice. He spun around as the door automatically closed.
A figure sitting on the couch caught his attention. It startled half to death. He studied the figure from behind without saying a word. They were still, sitting like the perfect statue.
They had , hair, but it lacked shine, moisture. could see their shoulders a little over the back of the couch; they had on a spaghetti strap tank top. Black.
He couldn’t see anything else, not even their facial features, from where he stood.
crept toward the female figure to get a better look at them. His heart raced in his chest. He could feel the panic tightening, making it harder to breathe.
Who was this person? Why were they here? How did they get in? What did they want?
He hoped they were harmless and weren’t there to kill or rob him. He was terrified and even wondered why he was even bothering to get a good look at them. Why wasn’t he calling the police?
As got closer, he saw the side of the girl’s face. His heart stopped. The only thing that crossed his mind at that point was . He dropped the carton of orange juice at the thought and startled the girl sitting on his couch. She turned to look at him, grabbing her heart.
“Oh , you scared me, she said with a small laugh.
blinked long and hard, breathing heavily. He recognized that laugh, that face. What was going on? Was he still asleep?
“? He managed to speak.
“Yeah. She answered slowly, looking at him strange.
Breathing even heavier than before, brought his hand to his chest as his eyes rolled back into his head and he fell to the floor. gasped in horror rushing to his side worried.
’s vision was blurry at first when he woke up, and then it focused on a face looking down at him.
Her eyes were just like he remembered, but they were almost see-through-like, too. Lifeless, hazy, with dark circles around them. Her skin and lips were all the same tone— grey white. Her hands were like ice; every bit of her was cold to the touch.
jerked up, remembering what had happened before he fainted. He must still be dreaming if was still in the room. He scooted away from her frantically.
“Shit, shit, shit! This can’t be happening to me, he muttered, his eyes wandering the room like crazy, not wanting to make eye contact with the girl.
“What’s wrong? ? ’s voice was soft, cautious, and concerned.
“What’s wrong? What’s wrong? His voice got louder with each second. “, you’re supposed to be dead, he said seriously.
rolled her eyes. “Well, aren’t you sweet.
“How did this happen? Have I gone mad? grabbed his head.
“No. You wished for me, remember?
thought for a moment and slowly remembered that day when he visited the cemetery, the day he really opened up his heart and admitted what a horrible person he had become. Could it be possible?
“I know you’ve been hurting inside since I’ve... you know, but you don’t have to anymore, said, moving closer toward who was too confused to move or speak.
He stared blankly across the room, unaware that was only a few inches from him now. She touched his hand and he flinched.
“I’m here for you now. I’m here to make the pain go away, she whispered as she cupped his face with her hands.
They took one long look into each others’ eyes, and for once in a really long while felt hope. The pain tearing his heart to shreds went away. But not for long.
“No. I can’t, he said, standing to his feet and storming out of the apartment.
sat there alone on the floor and sighed.
walked across the street dressed in a pair of boxers and socks, nothing else. He didn’t care who saw him at this point. He approached his car parked against the curb and climbed in. He let out a frustrated breath.
It was silent inside the car. All the windows were rolled up securely. He rested his head on the steering wheel, thinking.
It couldn’t be possible for someone to return from the dead, could it? had watched it happen in movies all the time, but they weren’t real. This was. It wasn’t possible. It couldn’t be true.
He lifted his head—tears stinging his eyes but not falling just yet. He felt angry inside, like he could explode at any given time. Who would be so cruel to do this to him? He let out another grunt of frustration, punching and hitting the steering wheel in front of him. He even honked the horn by accident.
stopped abruptly, breathing heavily. He sat for a moment trying to regain his calmer side. He got out of the car and headed back inside his apartment.
was on the couch again when he walked in. She looked up at him hopefully, afraid to move and frighten him again.
“How did this happen? He asked, keeping his distance from her.
“You wished for it. ‘I wish you were here so I could become the person that I was again’, she said.
“Yeah, but how is it possible for you to be here right now?
slowly smiled. “Because... you wished from your heart.
looked down at his feet more confused than ever. But the pain he had been feeling for far too long disappeared again. He felt better. He felt the way he did when was alive. How could he push that away?
“So, like, can other people see you? He looked up at her.
“Of course. Sure.
“And we can touch, hold hands? Kiss? He asked awkwardly.
“Yes, she assured him with her beautiful smile.
got up and walked toward him, but it startled and he stepped back, putting his hands up as if to surrender.
“I’m sorry.
“No, it’s all right. Let’s just take things slow, he said as he dropped his arms at his sides.
* * * *
“Why do I always sweat like a pig? said as he twisted off the cap to his water bottle.
“Because you are a pig, teased.
shot him a glare and laughed. didn’t react at all. His stare was blank and he seemed to be off in his own world. He couldn’t get out of his head.
“Pigs don’t sweat, actually, which is why they lay in mud, said.
and chuckled.
“And how do you know this? asked amused.
“I don’t know, he replied with another laugh.
The laughter slowly came to a stop when , and realized that hadn’t laughed once since they took a break from rehearsals. They exchanged a look of concern with each other.
“, called gently.
“Yeah, he responded as he returned to earth.
“All right, mate? asked cautiously.
“Yeah, sure, he nodded. “I was just thinking.
It fell silent between them. , and were afraid to ask what he had been thinking about, afraid that it would anger him and set him off. They didn’t want to do that. He had been in a better mood the past couple of days.
“Do you believe people can come back from the dead? asked.
“What? narrowed his eyebrows with confusion.
“Why do you ask? looked just as confused.
shrugged his shoulders. “Just wondering.
“Why? chuckled.
“You won’t believe me.
“What? , tell us, said.
He let out a sigh trying to prepare himself for what he was about to tell his band mates. They were going to laugh and crack jokes for sure.
“You’re gonna think I’ve gone completely mad when I tell you.
went on to tell , and about his morning, that was in his apartment sitting on the couch. They laughed hysterically, of course, and looked at him weirdly.
“I’m serious. is back, he said confidently.
“Right. She’s been summoned from her grave and now she’s living in your flat, said with sarcasm in his voice.
More laughter erupted, but just sat there disgusted by his friends. He got up from his chair and kicked it back against the wall, leaving the room. The laughter stopped and the three looked at each other.
got up and went after following him out back where he found him sitting on the curb. He sat down beside him, draping his arm over his shoulder. pulled away.
“Why would I be making this up?
“We don’t think you are, said. “You’ve just been really messed up lately. Maybe you were seeing things.
“I talked to her. She told me all about that day I went to the cemetery, that she’s here because of my wish, explained.
“What wish?
“I wished for her to come back so I can be the person that I was before I lost her, he said.
squeezed ’s shoulder gently and sighed. It all sounded so crazy, so untrue, but ’s face said otherwise. The sadness and the pain in his eyes proved to that he wasn’t making any of it up. He was telling the truth, and he seemed scared and confused. Was he starting to lose his mind?
