FALL INTO PLACE
Chapter 10: The End.

Flipping through an old scrapbook always brings back the best memories. I look to see pictures of Harry and myself as kids playing in the front yard. Of us playing on swings in the park. Harry’s first football game. My first swimming lesson. I turn the last few pages and smile to myself. I put the album onto the coffee table, and pick up the other one that is sitting right next to it.
The cover is baby pink, with the words Evan Diana Poynter, and “My Baby Album written on the top. Below is an empty frame, one that is waiting to be filled any day now. The due date is coming up, and preparations for Evan to come into the world have been non-stop. The nursery is done. Clothes, diapers, toys, bottles, and wipes have all been bought. Now all we needed was the baby.
I set the empty book down and lay back onto the couch. I had been put on bed rest 3 days ago because the doctor was expecting Evan any minute. I decided to get up to move upstairs to watch a movie. As I stood up from the couch, I heard a key in the front door and it quickly opened up. I heard a quick shuffle over to where I was standing.
“Oh no you don’t!
“Come on! I can get up the stairs by myself.
“No, I’m supposed to help you with everything!
“Dougie, I know you’re just trying to compensate for all the years that,
“Shhh, I just care about you and the baby. He said as he kissed my softly on the temple.
He helped me up the stairs, and helped me get onto the bed so I could watch a movie. He jumped onto the bed next to me, and I cuddled into his arms. He set one hand around my body, the other on my stomach; on our baby. The moment was movie worthy. I felt like I could stay here forever, and I’m sure Dougie felt the same way. These last few months of the pregnancy have been rough, but now that Dougie and I both figured out our issues, it was becoming easier every moment. I was finally happy. We were finally happy. Together. Harry and the other guys were all relieved when they found out we worked it out. It would have been a weird situation for all of them after the baby was born.
I fell asleep to the background noise of the movie playing, and Dougie stroking my hair. My dreams have been happier lately. They were dreams of the future; me and Dougie with Evan. At holidays, birthdays, the recording studio. I dreamt of it all. And for once I knew it was going to come true.
I woke up with a sharp pain in my stomach. I reached under my blanket, feeling it was drenched in water, and screamed. Dougie came rushing in.
“, are you okay? What’s wrong?
“I think my water broke. We need to get to the hospital. I tried to push myself up.
“No, you stay there. Um, uh….I’ll pack a bag. We’ll call the guys on the way. Don’t worry. We will get you there in time. Just stay there and I’ll get everything ready. Dougie said, as he started rushing around the room trying to find everything we would need. As soon as the bag was packed he helped me out to the car, dialing Harry’s phone number as soon as the car was started. The speed he drove at almost made me nauseas, but I held it together, taking deep breaths the whole trip.
By the time we got to the hospital, Harry, Danny, and Tom were already there waiting. The nurse gave me a wheelchair, and rushed me to a delivery room where I was immediately hooked up to five different machines. The pain was increasing, and it was getting harder to hold in my screams. I grabbed Dougie’s hand, squeezing all my energy into it. I didn’t want anyone in the room other than Dougie, so I was sure Harry was pacing outside in the waiting room. The doctor finally rushed in and briefed us on what was going to happen. The baby was supposed to arrive within the hour, based on my dilation. I wasn’t really listening; I just wanted it over with.
After about 20 minutes of contractions, I knew it was time. The doctor came in once again, and set up for Evan to arrive. I was sweating and crying from all the pain, but soon enough it would be over and Evan would be in my life forever.
*****
I woke up to a dim light, feeling relaxed and warm. I looked to my left, and Dougie was sleeping with his head lying on my bed. I heard a soft cry from the right side of me. I looked over to see Evan sleeping in her small crib next to me. I smiled, and reached over to stroke her cheek. She was mine. I was hers. I finally had my daughter, Evan. Evan Poynter. I smiled at the thought of her name because 4 months ago, I didn’t even dream that Dougie would accept her as his own. And now we were together, happy, and parents. I felt his weight shift on my bed, but I was in a trance looking at my daughter, so I didn’t even notice him get up.
I felt his hand trace down my cheek, as I turned to face him. His smile lit up the room. He looked so happy. The pure joy in his eyes assured me that this would work out, and that we would be happy.
He walked around to the other side of the bed and picked up Evan, placing her into my arms. He kissed her nose, then my forehead, and sat back down in the chair. I heard the door open and the nurse came in to check on us.
“How is everything going? she asked quietly.
“Absolutely perfect. I said, beaming.
“Alright, I’ll be back in a few hours to release you.
“Thank you. I said as she left.
“You know what’s interesting? Dougie whispered.
“Hmm? I responded.
“It’s interesting how in the end, everything just seems to fall into place in life.
“What do you mean?
“Well, when this thing first started, I never thought this could happen. Ever. Then I always thought about how hard raising her would be separately, and all the problems we would have to face. But now, we can do it all together. Nothing is tearing us apart now that we’re together.
“I love you, Dougie.
“I love you too. I just have one question though.
“What I asked, panicking.
“Will you marry me?
I smiled, kissing his soft lips. “Of course
“Happy Birthday Evan, mommy and daddy are getting married.
“You just made this day 100 times better than it already was. You know that, right?
“I have one more thing.
“Dougie, really. No more. You already gave me a daughter. And now a husband. What else could I possibly need?
“This he said pulling out a small box that revealed a diamond ring. It was only the third most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Behind my daughter and my now fiancé of course.
“It’s beautiful.
“Not as beautiful as you two. He smiled, kissing both Evan and I.
“How could I be so lucky? How did this all happen? I said.
“Like I said, in the end, everything falls into place.
THE END.
